Переглядів 4,3 тис.11 років тому
(Sadly this line is now mothballed - late 2014). This shunt starts at Whangarei, but the first bit of footage you'll see is the shunt approaching Waiotira - you'll see that the loco is now on the other end of the train running LHL went it departs the junction (Waiotira) and heading out on to the Dargaville Branch. Next we see it arriving in Dargaville Yard before returning down the branch short...

Переглядів 42 тис.11 років тому
In Mid-Feb DCP trailing loco on the Otiria Shunt derailed negotiating the double slip points in the Otiria Yard. The experienced track gang soon had the loco back on to the rails. The main part of the video you will see the lead loco separate, turn on the triangle and rejoin the DCP, it was done very quickly and the video was nearly shot in real time

Our Hut Heritage Hub Sir Truby King Railway Bridge Walking Track committee just finish doing the Sir Truby King Railway Bridge Walking Track and had the opening on the 27th November 2020. It was a great opening and we had a great piper which would have I sure impressed the late Sir Truby King, its only 500m long track up to the old Sir Truby King railway bridge that crossed the Tahakopa river 500m up the river from the Tahakopa Valley road bridge. Its a great walk and I cut the grass and this intern makes it easy for people to walk up this track. Its got interoperation panels on the track to inform those who walk this track, all the history about Sir Truby king business interests here in the Tahakopa Valley. The entrance to this track is just before the Tahakopa Valley Road bridge, it well sign posted and you just enter the track area by going through the UK built kissing gate, there is a large railway sign in position there and a car-park opposite the entrance of the track. I'm going to start soon on the stage two of this project, which involves setting up a "Holographic projection" using "projected imagery controlled kinetics' to have the Sir Truby King train coming towards the bridge and climbing the embankment onto the bridge, this is good forward lateral thinking, and this action is really what Sir Truby King was all about in what he really did achieved here in the Tahakopa Valley. Danone the Infant Balclutha infant milk powder plant staff are designing at present, a interoperation panel, that will show the history of Sir Truby King Tahakopa infant milk powder pioneer plant that he setup here in the Tahakopa Valley around1918,. Todays Danone Balclutha infant milk powder plant setup, will also be on display on this interoperation panel showing todays infant milk powder production and intern their exporting of their infant milk powder product. This interoperation will be setup at the southern end of the track, just around the area where the old railway bridge is situated, we hope to install this panel sometime this year 2021.

These Maryborough Drivers certainly knew what they were about. I have had to overcome Wheelslipping on trains with 1720's by sneaking on a bit of independent brake to give just enough pressure on the wheels to catch the one that wants to let go and then causes the train to grind to a halt. They did a good job of controlling that as they had two Drivers working each Loco individually. Grass is always a pain to try an lift a train and even worse when trying to stop. Most times the sand boxes are either empty or the sand has packed down so tightly that it won't come out the pipe. That's why us older generation drivers (and I use that term loosely... as I'm the youngest of the older) always carry a billy. It's not just for water mate! it'll help you get unstuck and get home by putting some small loose dirt on the rail...

My late Mother in-law was Willa Martin, her and the late Philip Martin where dairy farmers on Dewe Road, they also feed the skim milk to the pigs and they had some sheep. The cream (Jersey cows) went in cans to the Owaka Butter factory (Canoe butter) was the brand and they supplied all of the South Otago area, what was over was exported to the UK. The Martins had one house winter cow, the cream was just so thick one could stand the spoon up-straight in the jug, it was just great pouring it over one's hot porridge at the breakfast meal, they sure were just great days and I was lucky enough to experience it all.

This Tahakopa railway station and the surrounding area was just a great NZ railway setup, it had everything, it was destroyed by the action of a late Peter Gordon who was the NZ National Government Minister of Transport and Railways in 28th February 1971. My late mother-inlaw took a photo of that last Tahakopa Dunedin train going along the railway towards MacLeannan down in front of their home off Dewe Road. It could have been all retained for a future, as it could have been a great cycling or walking track, but for a few brain-dead local half-wits, who could just never have had any lateral thinking ability, total brain dead fools of people.

Good old Queensland Rail. Maybe there were just too many grasshoppers in the track. If it isn't bulk they don't want it. My old man saw the writing on the wall 30 to 40 years ago as a loco driver

Great historical footage now that the Gorge road has closed for good. Thanks for uploading. I have been through the Manawatu Gorge perhaps a dozen or so times on a train in my lifetime and driven through there thousands of times. This clip was the year before the little tunnels were daylighted in 2008. I took many photos of the process. Woodville railway station is all boaded up now, but there are plans to restore it I hear. I left NZ in 2011 & love seeing these clips.

Wow definitely in the north island for sure...'cause down here where I live (Invercargill) we are the DX capital of NZ! 1 DX would pull that lot with ease...even up a steep hill...In your awesome vid that DFB is probably working as hard as it gets, it's laying down sand on the tracks for grip so hard it's almost digging a trench. I'm unsure if the track is flat or a gradient. Nice vid man.

The train has two loco on for the return trip to and from Christchurch. The extra three 'banker' locos are added at Otira for the 11km section to Arthurs Pass. At a grade of 1:33, the the train gains 1200 feet in altitude! Although four locos working will get the train up the grade, five are used for safety.

Regarding the engines, the first British-built DSCs (of which this locomotive is the last remaining member) were built with Rolls-Royce engines, and they were refitted with newer Rolls-Royce engines. The NZR-built DSCs were built first with Leyland engines, then were rebuilt with Cummins engines. Locomotives built with Rolls-Royce engines were never fitted with Cummins engines, as the engine bays were substantially different.
